A performance to accompany her selected drawings,1984 - 2023, in the GRIT exhibition at Magdalen Art Space Oxford.

 

MATERIA shares the cyclical experience of memory in a joining of the hand, eye and mind. Through sensory actions and touch, the artist reaches for fragment memories to bring them into the present for healing from past hurts. The help between artists and those who support them, and that is often invisible in art making and exhibiting, is brought to the fore as the artist asks for assistance from a colleague in managing the work physically. 

 

Objects used in the work include 35mm slides of works in the artist’s own archive, the herb rosemary - symbolic of remembrance and a broken honeypot, an object that was precious to the artist’s mother and that was recently smashed. Artist Peta Lloyd helps Clare try to fix the broken pot with masking tape that bears ink from drawings she has made whilst singing.
